Engaging Stories for Enquiring Minds
Children’s Books by Andy Wheeler
From playful rhyme to layered supernatural adventure.
I write across a range of children’s genres — from light-hearted, character-led rhyme to structured middle-grade fiction rooted in mystery, history, and myth.

Some stories are playful and rhythmic, built around humour, eccentric characters, and the natural musicality of language. Rhyme comes instinctively to me, and I enjoy crafting stories that feel lively when read aloud.

Others lean into atmosphere.
Spooky towns. Old buildings. Family secrets. Hidden histories. I’m especially drawn to mystery-led narratives where the setting carries weight and where young characters must untangle something older and deeper than themselves.
Across everything I write, structure matters. Chapters build with intention. Plot threads connect. Endings feel earned.
Story comes first — always.
The Thread of Shadows Series
My current middle-grade series, The Thread of Shadows, follows two siblings as they move through eerie towns, shadowed buildings, family curses, and the unsettling edges of time itself.
Part One, ‘The Shadows of Brynmoor Cottage’, is published and available in Waterstones, with the remaining books in the four-part arc scheduled for release in due course.
The series blends atmosphere with emotional stakes, weaving history and myth into a continuous story that rewards readers who follow the journey from beginning to end.

The Stories
My work includes:

-
Rhyming and poetic picture books.
-
Humorous, character-driven early fiction.
-
Stand-alone spooky adventures.
-
Ongoing middle-grade series built around long-form story arcs.

What connects them is engagement, clarity, and narrative cohesion.
I don’t write to simplify ideas for children. I write to invite them in — trusting that strong storytelling will carry them forward.
For Parents & Families
Parents often look for books that hold attention without feeling heavy-handed.
Whether it’s the rhythm of rhyme or the pull of an unfolding mystery, my aim is to create stories children return to — books that feel satisfying, imaginative, and complete.

For Schools & Educators
Through author visits and reading sessions, I explore both creativity and craft — how rhyme works, how suspense builds, how chapters are structured, and how historical themes can shape fictional worlds.
Sessions are:

-
Age-appropriate.
-
Structured yet conversational.
-
Focused on demonstrating how stories are constructed.

The emphasis is not only on imagination but also on demonstrating that storytelling is a skill that can be developed and refined. You can book a visit here from the contact page.
