Beating The Odds
Life Before and After Open-Heart Surgery
Lived-experience support for patients and families
Surviving a heart attack is only the beginning.
What follows is rarely spoken about in detail — the shock of diagnosis, the fear before surgery, the emotional crash after discharge, the uncertainty that lingers long after the operation is over.
I know this because I lived it.
A widowmaker heart attack. Emergency open-heart surgery. Triple bypass. And the long, often confusing process of recovery that follows.
Doctors saved my life. The hospital care was extraordinary. But once I was home, I realised how little anyone prepares you for what recovery actually feels like — physically, mentally, and emotionally.
That is why I wrote Beating the Odds.
What This Book Is — and Is Not
This is not a medical guide.
It does not replace professional advice.
It is a calm, honest account of the psychological and emotional reality of open-heart surgery — before, during, and after.
Heart surgery changes more than the body. It affects confidence. Identity. A sense of safety. It alters how ordinary sensations are interpreted. It reshapes daily life in ways few people anticipate.
These are experiences many patients quietly share, but often struggle to articulate.

My Perspective
I am not a clinician or therapist.
I am someone who moved through diagnosis, waiting lists, surgery, discharge, and the slow rebuilding of everyday normality.

My focus is on the emotional terrain of that journey:

-
Fear before surgery.
-
Anxiety during recovery.
-
Loss of confidence.
-
The pressure to feel grateful while struggling.
-
The gap between hospital care and real life.

Recovery is not only physical. And it is rarely linear.
Who This Book Is For
Beating the Odds is written for:

-
People awaiting open-heart surgery.
-
Those recently discharged.
-
Those further along in recovery.
-
Families and carers supporting them.

It offers context, reassurance, and perspective — grounded in lived experience rather than instruction.

Talks & Conversations
Alongside the book, I speak with patient groups, charities, and organisations about recovery from an experience-led standpoint.
Sessions are reflective, steady, and non-clinical — focused on helping people feel less isolated in what they are navigating.
Optional Online Support
I am developing a small, optional online space for those preparing for surgery or navigating recovery who would like additional reassurance.
This may include:
-
Recorded conversations based on lived experience.
-
Small-group discussions.
-
Contributions from trusted fitness and wellbeing professionals.
This is not a programme or medical course.
Simply additional support, available if needed.
Further details will be shared following publication.
